Second District Supervisor: Mike Kerns

Biography of Mike Kerns

Supervisor Kerns was born and raised in Napa, California.

In 1967 Mr. Kerns won a Golden Gloves Championship and was a counselor at Parks Job Corps Center in Pleasanton.

In 1973 he became a Police Officer for the City of Tiburon, Marin County.

Mr. Kerns transferred to the City of Petaluma Police Department in 1978. He was promoted to Sergeant in 1980 and retired in December 1998. While with the City of Petaluma, he served as the following:

  • Crisis Team Supervisor
  • Peer Counseling Supervisor
  • Youth Diversion Counselor
  • Press Information Officer during the Polly Klaas kidnapping case
  • Coordinator, supervisor and teacher of the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Program in Petaluma Schools

Mike married Carol Madsen in 1981. They reside in Petaluma and have two adult children.

He received an A.A. degree from Santa Rosa Junior College and a B.A. degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Sonoma State University in 1985. He was an instructor for the Santa Rosa Criminal Justice Training Center and in Media Relations at Los Medanos College.

Mike Kerns was elected to the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors in November 1998 and took office representing the Second District in January 1999. He was the Board of Supervisors’ Chair for 2008. Supervisor Kerns’ third term started on January 1, 2007.
